« "Girona is not a city — it is a living rampart. Every inhabitant is a soldier, every street a trench." »— — Report from a French officer to Marshal Augereau, 1809
The siege of Girona in 1809 is one of the most heroic episodes of the Peninsular War. The city, protected by its medieval ramparts and by the forts of Montjuïc, Capuchins and La Reina, resisted three major assaults between June and December.
General Mariano Álvarez de Castro, commander of the garrison, embodied resistance to the point of obsession. Ill with fever, he directed operations from his bed. The Company of Santa Bárbara, composed entirely of women, supplied the bastions under enemy fire.
When the city fell on December 10, 1809, after seven months of siege, famine and epidemics had killed more defenders than combat. Álvarez de Castro was imprisoned and died in a French cell. He remains the symbol of Catalan resistance against the invader.

The stops on your route are a surprise. You'll discover them one by one, guided by your phone, starting from the meeting point.
