Water, fire and the philosopher's stone
The Banys Àrabs of Girona, built around 1194, imitate the classic hammam structure: frigidarium, tepidarium, caldarium. Their entrance hall, with its octagonal dome supported by eight slender columns, is one of the most photogenic spaces in Catalonia.
In the Middle Ages, Girona was an intellectual crossroads where Jewish, Christian and Muslim scholars exchanged their knowledge. Alchemy — a blend of chemistry, philosophy and mysticism — circulated in manuscripts translated from Arabic to Latin by monks at the nearby monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants.
The Church eventually banned these practices. But the alchemical manuscripts survived, hidden in monastic libraries — waiting centuries before modern science would acknowledge its debt to these seekers of the impossible.
