The cathedral, the tomb and the power of sacred bones
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Are the bones of the Apostle James really what rests beneath the cathedral? This question has obsessed the Church for twelve centuries — and the answer is more complex than you imagine.
The cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is built on a tomb. But whose is it? The Church claims it belongs to the Apostle James, beheaded in Jerusalem in 44 AD, whose body miraculously crossed the Mediterranean. This game plunges you into twelve centuries of faith, doubt and religious power.
« "Relics are not proofs. They are acts of faith — and acts of faith move mountains, build cathedrals and forge nations." »— — Reflection of a canon of Compostela, 19th century
In 813, the hermit Pelayo was guided by a star to a tomb in a field — the campus stellae, which would give Compostela its name. Bishop Theodomir authenticated the relics as those of the Apostle James. King Alfonso II built the first church.
The current cathedral, begun in 1075, is a Romanesque masterpiece enlarged over the centuries. The Botafumeiro, a giant 80 kg censer that swings across the nave at 20 metres height, is a medieval invention designed to mask the smell of exhausted pilgrims.
In 1879, after centuries of neglect, the relics were "rediscovered" in the crypt. Pope Leo XIII authenticated them in 1884. But doubt persists: some historians believe the tomb belongs to Priscillian, a heretical bishop of the 4th century, executed in Trier. The mystery remains unsolved — and that is precisely what makes this place fascinating.
You're not just buying an escape game. You're carrying a living guide — historical anecdotes, forgotten legends, key monuments, hidden architecture — unfolding as you go.
At each stop, places ordinary guides miss — secret façades, sculpted crests, alleys steeped in history.

Of course. Stop at a café, have lunch, resume later: your progress is saved. Many players bake a meal break into the trail, especially with families.
Great fit: no costume required, the team really collaborates (it's not a linear path), and the final code earns you a souvenir photo. Pick a calm time slot — early afternoon usually.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures, fewer tourists, gorgeous light. Summer is also great but go for early morning before 11 or late afternoon. Winter is perfectly playable, especially in southern cities — Santiago · Cathedral & adjacent monasteries often feels more authentic then.
