The Tribunal of fear
The Inquisition established itself in Galicia in 1574, with a tribunal based in Santiago. Its mission: to hunt conversos — Jews converted to Catholicism suspected of still practising their old religion in secret. Galicia, a gateway to Europe, was a strategic location.
The auto-da-fé — public ceremonies where the condemned were exhibited and sometimes burned — took place in the Plaza de la Quintana, right behind the cathedral. The accused wore the sanbenito, a tunic of infamy, and were paraded through the streets.
The Tribunal of Galicia also condemned captured Protestant English and Dutch sailors, those accused of witchcraft (the meigas, Galician witches), and anyone denounced by a neighbour. The Inquisition was abolished in 1834 — but the sanbenitos remained hanging on church walls for decades, reminding families of their eternal shame.
