The anonymous genius of stone
Master Mateo received in 1168 an annual pension from King Ferdinand II of León — an extraordinary fact for a craftsman of the time, proof of royal esteem for his talent. He worked twenty years on the Portico, between 1168 and 1188.
The Pórtico comprises three arches adorned with over 200 figures. At the centre, Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four Evangelists. To the left, scenes from the Old Testament. To the right, the Last Judgement. Each figure has a unique expression — the prophets seem to converse with each other, the musicians play recognisable real instruments.
Tradition holds that Mateo depicted himself kneeling at the foot of the central pillar — the "Santo dos Croques" — where pilgrims came to knock their foreheads against the stone to receive some of his genius. This practice was banned in 2000 to preserve the sculpture.
