In April 1975, the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, seized Phnom Penh, marking the beginning of an era of absolute terror known as Democratic Kampuchea. Driven by a radical agrarian-communist ideology, the regime undertook a forced transformation of society, evacuating cities and subjecting the population to forced labor, famine, and mass executions. Any form of opposition, real or perceived, was brutally suppressed.
At the heart of this barbarity was S-21, the former Tuol Svay Prey high school, transformed into a security and torture center. Thousands of people – intellectuals, civil servants, soldiers, and even Party members suspected of treason – were imprisoned, interrogated under torture, and ultimately executed.
