Norodom Sihanouk (1922-2012) is a central figure in 20th-century Cambodian history. First crowned king in 1941, he abdicated in 1955 to become prime minister and leader of the Sangkum Reastr Niyum (People's Socialist Community), which dominated Cambodian political life. He led Cambodia to independence in 1953 and tried to maintain a policy of neutrality in the face of Cold War tensions and the Vietnam War, portraying himself as the 'dancing king' who orchestrated his country's balance. Charismatic and popular, he juggled the modernization of the country with the preservation of its cultural identity.
However, Sihanouk's neutral position became increasingly untenable. In 1970, a coup d'état overthrew him, orchestrated by his own Prime Minister, Lon Nol. Seeking refuge in China, Sihanouk unexpectedly allied himself with the Khmer Rouge, his former enemies, in a united front against the US-backed Lon Nol government. This tactical alliance, dictated by realpolitik, played a crucial role in the Khmer Rouge's rise to power in 1975, who then carried out one of history's most brutal genocides, raising the complex question of historical responsibility and the consequences of extreme political choices.
