Tuol Sleng: From School to People's Prison
Tuol Svay Prey High School, a secondary school in Phnom Penh, was transformed by Pol Pot's regime into a detention, interrogation, torture, and execution center, known as S-21 (Security Prison 21). Thousands of Cambodians, intellectuals, former officials, military personnel, and even party members suspected of treason were imprisoned there. Torture was systematic and documented with chilling rigor, aiming to extract often imaginary 'confessions' of treason and conspiracy.
Upon the liberation of Phnom Penh by Vietnamese troops in January 1979, S-21 was discovered, revealing the horror of the atrocities committed. Photographs of the victims, files, torture instruments, and testimonies from the few survivors allowed the site to be transformed into the Genocide Museum, an essential place of remembrance to understand the scale of the Cambodian tragedy and prevent such barbarity from recurring.
