From Khmer Empire to Colonial Influence

Battambang was founded in the 11th century by the Khmer Empire as a fishing village along the Sangkae River. By the 18th century, it had grown into a trading city with approximately 2,500 residents, concentrated along a single road parallel to the river. In 1795, Siam (modern-day Thailand) annexed much of northwestern Cambodia, including Battambang. It remained under Siamese control as a provincial capital for over a century, governed by the Abhaiwongse family. This period of Siamese rule lasted until March 23, 1907, when the province was ceded to the French, becoming part of French Indochina and rejoining Cambodia.

Modernization and Conflict

During the French colonial era, Battambang developed into Cambodia's second most advanced city after Phnom Penh. The French administration implemented an urban layout with a grid pattern of streets and structures. Three main streets were built parallel to the Sangkae River, connecting both sides with two bridges in 1917. Further development in the 1930s included the construction of a railway line linking Battambang to Phnom Penh, boosting its role as an agricultural trading center. After Cambodia gained independence in 1953, Prince Norodom Sihanouk chose Battambang as the center of the independence movement and led its modernization, with the addition of factories, schools, and the Battambang airport. The city faced significant challenges during the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979, when its population was forcibly evacuated to the countryside, and many died. The Battambang Provincial Museum, for instance, was converted into a prison during this period. Conflict continued in and around Battambang until the Khmer Rouge insurgency ended in the 1990s. The city was largely off-limits to visitors during these decades. Since then, Battambang has experienced growth and was recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2023.

• —Battambang Provincial Museum — Inaugurated in 1968 by King Norodom Sihanouk, this museum houses over 1,000 artifacts from the pre-Angkorian and Angkorian periods, offering a chronological overview of the province's history and cultural heritage.
• —Wat Samrong Knong — This pagoda was used as a prison and execution site by the Khmer Rouge. Today, it serves as a memorial and a place for reflection, with a stupa containing the remains of victims.
• —Phare Ponleu Selpak — This non-profit arts organization provides free arts education and training to disadvantaged youth. Visitors can attend their contemporary circus performances, which often incorporate Cambodian folktales and social issues.
• —Wat Damrey Sor (White Elephant Pagoda) — Established in 1904, this Buddhist temple complex blends Khmer and Thai architectural styles, reflecting Battambang's historical ties to both cultures. Its main hall features a three-tiered roof, carvings, and two white elephant statues at the entrance.

The dry season, from November to January, is the best time to visit Battambang. Temperatures average around 33°C, offering warm conditions. Skies are generally clear, and rainfall is rare, making it suitable for outdoor activities. December is often considered the peak month for pleasant weather.

Avoid the burning season in February, which can affect air quality due to slash-and-burn farming. The cloudiest and rainiest months are typically from May to October, with August experiencing the highest precipitation.

Battambang is accessible by road from Phnom Penh (approximately 291 km via National Highway 5) and Siem Reap (about 77 km, though bus journeys can take around 4 hours). Several bus companies offer daily services. A boat trip from Siem Reap to Battambang via the Sangkae River and Tonle Sap Lake is an option during high-water months (roughly August to February), taking 5-9 hours. The Battambang Airport is not widely used for commercial passenger flights.

Within the city, tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis are the primary modes of transport and are affordable. A full day with a tuk-tuk driver can cost between $10 and $25. Bicycles are available for rent, typically around $2-3 per day, suitable for exploring the flat terrain. Parking is generally not an issue.
