Since 1362, every summer, the pehlivan coat themselves in olive oil and wrestle on Sarayiçi Island.
Legend has it that forty Ottoman soldiers wrestled through the night near Edirne. Two of them — Kara Ali and Kara Hasan — refused to stop and died in combat. Their bodies were found near forty springs, hence the name Kırkpınar ("forty springs"). Since then, the tournament has never ceased. A former başpehlivan hid across eight locations in Edirne the secrets of his invincible technique.

Kırkpınar, six centuries of oil wrestling
Oil wrestling (yağlı güreş) is Turkey's national sport. The wrestlers, clad only in leather trousers (kispet), coat themselves in olive oil that makes holds extremely difficult. The Kırkpınar tournament, founded in 1362 under Murad I's reign, has been inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Heritage list since 2010.
Sarayiçi Island, between two branches of the Tunca, also served as a Janissary training ground. The ruins of the old Ottoman palace are still visible there. The Meriç Bridge (1847), spanning the Maritsa, links the city to this mythical site. Each year, the başpehlivan (head champion) receives a golden belt and the title of "master of the forty springs."

At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you.
