In 1575, Mimar Sinan completes the Selimiye at over 80. He declares it his "masterwork."
Sinan had built the Süleymaniye for Süleyman and the Şehzade for Prince Mehmed. But it was in Edirne, for Sultan Selim II, that he achieved his absolute masterpiece. The Selimiye's dome surpasses Hagia Sophia's in diameter. Sinan, in the twilight of his life, concealed within eight pillars and arches of the mosque the secret proportions that make his dome possible — an engineer's testament.

Sinan, the Michelangelo of the East
Mimar Sinan (1489-1588) is the greatest architect of the Ottoman Empire. Born Christian in Anatolia, recruited through the devşirme, he became a military engineer before receiving the title of chief architect (mimarbaşı) in 1538. Over fifty years he designed more than 350 buildings: mosques, bridges, aqueducts, hammams.
The Selimiye Mosque in Edirne (1568-1575) is his architectural testament. Its 31.28-metre dome rests on an octagon of eight pillars — an unprecedented solution that frees the interior space of all visual obstacles. The four 83-metre minarets, the tallest in Turkey, frame the most recognisable silhouette in Islamic architecture. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 2011.
