The Edirne Palace was the largest in the Empire. Only foundations and a memory remain.
For ninety years, Edirne was the Ottoman capital. Its palace, the Saray-ı Cedid-i Amire, exceeded Topkapı in size. Mehmed II was born here and planned the conquest of Constantinople within its walls. In 1878, a munitions explosion during the Russo-Turkish War reduced it to ruins. Today, only eight foundations emerge from the grass — but each holds a fragment of the imperial plan that Murad IV had carved into stone.

The Saray-ı Cedid-i Amire, a phantom palace
Murad I transferred the Ottoman capital to Edirne in 1363. The palace, expanded by each sultan, became the largest palatial complex in the Empire — gardens, kiosks, harems, kitchens, baths, justice towers. Mehmed II was born here in 1432 and spent his childhood observing his father's military plans. It was here that he conceived the siege of Constantinople.
The palace survived three centuries, but the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 proved fatal. The Ottomans, fearing the Russians would seize the munitions stored in the palace, blew it up. The explosion destroyed nearly the entire complex. Only the foundations of the Cihannüma Tower, the imperial kitchens and the Justice Tower still emerge from the ground — vestiges of a swallowed world.
