Lecce, the Florence of the South
Founded by the Messapians and later Romanised, Lecce conceals a full Roman amphitheatre beneath its Piazza Sant'Oronzo, rediscovered in 1901 during construction work. The pietra leccese, an easily carved golden limestone, allowed 17th-century craftsmen to invent a unique baroque known as "leccese", made of garlands, saints and fantastic creatures.
Under Spanish then Bourbon rule, the city became a laboratory of sculpture where every church facade — Santa Croce first among them — is a page of stone. The carvers secretly signed their works by mixing in portraits, forbidden coats of arms and pre-Roman Messapian symbols.
