Savoca, the hilltop village
Founded in the 12th century, Savoca is a medieval village clinging 300 m above the Ionian sea. It once counted up to five convents and seventeen churches for 5000 inhabitants. The Capuchin friars installed their own death-room there in the 17th century, where seven notables were mummified standing, dressed in their finery — a more radical Sicilian tradition than in Palermo.
In 1971 Francis Ford Coppola arrived in Savoca to shoot the Sicilian scenes of The Godfather — the Corsican village of Corleone being deemed too modern. Bar Vitelli became the place where Michael asks for Apollonia’s hand. Today the bar still operates, walls covered in photos, and the village notarial archives preserve quiet land agreements between families, some dating to the 1920s.
