A poem on copper, five caches, a lineage's treasure

Teguise was the capital of Lanzarote for over four centuries, from 1418 to 1852. Founded by Maciot de Béthencourt, nephew of the Norman conqueror, it became the island's political and religious center. But its wealth attracted pirates: Morato Arraez in 1569, Dogali in 1586, and the terrible 1618 raid that devastated the town. It was during this last attack that legend places the disappearance of the Béthencourt treasure. The former capital, with its palaces, convents and fortress atop Guanapay, preserves the memory of this era — and perhaps the secret of that engraved poem.

— Fragment of the poem attributed to the last Béthencourt heir, 1618

Teguise: four centuries as capital, four centuries of raids

Maciot de Béthencourt, nephew of Jean de Béthencourt, founded Teguise around 1418 and made it Lanzarote's capital. He married Teguise, a local Guanche princess, giving the town her name. For four centuries, this inland city — perched at 300 meters altitude to escape coastal raids — was the beating heart of the island.

Despite its elevated position, Teguise suffered devastating raids. In 1569, Algerian corsair Morato Arraez captured 300 inhabitants. In 1586, Dogali razed the San Francisco convent. But worst was the 1618 raid, when a fleet of eight Barbary galleys sacked the town for three days. Hundreds of inhabitants were enslaved in Algiers.

It was in this chaos that legend places the act of the last Béthencourt heir: she allegedly divided the family treasure into five caches hidden in key buildings around town, with a copper-engraved poem as the only map. The town never fully recovered. In 1852, the capital was transferred to Arrecife, closer to the port. Teguise became a sleepy village — preserving its medieval heritage intact.
