Smyrna, the "pearl of the Levant", was the most cosmopolitan city of the Ottoman Empire — Greeks, Turks, Jews, Armenians and Levantines crossed paths beneath the bazaar's arcades.
The Kemeraltı bazaar has existed since the 17th century, a labyrinth of covered alleys where spices, carpets, gold jewellery and olive oil soaps are sold. Before the Great Fire of 1922, each community had its quarter, its language and its trade secrets. A Levantine merchant, sensing catastrophe approaching, reportedly hid his treasure in eight bazaar shops, each marked with a symbol only an initiate would recognise.

Cosmopolitan Smyrna
Founded 8,500 years ago, Smyrna is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Under the Ottomans, it became the Empire's premier commercial port and the most European city in Anatolia. The Levantines — Frankish families settled since the Crusades — made fortunes in cotton, figs and raisin trading.
The Frankish quarter lined the waterfront, the Greek community dominated commerce and education, the Sephardic Jews occupied the Havra quarter and the Armenians that of Basmane. This mosaic collapsed in September 1922 when a fire ravaged the Christian quarters, ending centuries of cohabitation.

At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you.
