Caterina Cornaro is said to have brought a relic of the True Cross from Outremer.
Exiled to Asolo by Venice, she is said to have hidden it in the walls rather than hand it to the Doge. In Carducci's 'City of a Hundred Horizons', her humanist court welcomed Bembo, Giorgione and Leonardo da Vinci.

Asolo, a queen's refuge
Caterina Cornaro (1454-1510), a Venetian noblewoman, married James II Lusignan, king of Cyprus, in 1472. Widowed the next year, she ruled alone until Venice, in 1489, forced her to abdicate to annex the island. In exchange, the Serenissima granted her the lordship of Asolo, the royal title, a pension and a small court.
There she founded a humanist circle where Pietro Bembo wrote his 'Asolani', where Giorgione painted, and where Leonardo is said to have visited. Eleonora Duse died here in 1924, Robert Browning lived here, Freya Stark was buried here. Few Veneto towns hold so many literary memories.
