The Scaligeri, lords of Verona
From 1262 to 1387, the della Scala family — the Scaligeri — ruled Verona and projected power as far as Padua, Vicenza, Parma and Lucca. Cangrande I, friend of Dante and emblem of the dynasty, welcomed the exiled Florentine poet and inspired the figure of the 'Veltro' in the Divine Comedy.
Their emblem, the ladder (scala), still marks the city: on Castelvecchio they built in 1354, on the fortified Ponte Scaligero crossing the Adige, and above all on the Arche Scaligere, Gothic tombs raised under stone canopies near Santa Maria Antica. The Guelph-Ghibelline wars ended their rule in 1387.
