The dark genius who painted Spain's nightmares
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Born near Zaragoza, made painter to the king, Francisco Goya plunged into darkness to reveal the truth no one dared look at.
Francisco de Goya y Lucientes was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, an arid village forty kilometres from Zaragoza. It was in the Aragonese capital that he cut his teeth, painting the frescoes of the Basilica del Pilar before leaving to conquer Madrid. But it is in Zaragoza that his roots remain — and where his shadow still lingers.

« "The sleep of reason produces monsters." »— — Francisco de Goya, Los Caprichos, plate 43, 1799
The young Goya was ambitious, fiery, charming. Trained in Zaragoza under José Luzán, at twenty-five he landed the commission for the frescoes on the vault of the Pilar — a luminous work, full of colour and movement.
But in 1793, a mysterious illness left him deaf. This forced silence transformed his vision of the world. His court portraits, once flattering, became cruelly lucid. Then came Los Caprichos, The Disasters of War, and finally the Black Paintings — those terrifying frescoes he painted on the walls of his own house.
Goya died in exile in Bordeaux in 1828, but his work had changed art forever. He is the last of the great Old Masters and the first of the moderns — the bridge between Velázquez and Picasso.
