Beneath your feet, a Roman city has slept for two thousand years
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Emperor Augustus founded this city in 14 BC. Its baths, forum and theatre are still there — six metres below the surface.
Few visitors know it: beneath Zaragoza's modern streets, a network of underground museums lets you literally descend into ancient Rome. The forum, the river port, the public baths and the theatre — everything is preserved, accessible, and almost deserted.
« "Caesar Augusta was the only city in Hispania to bear the emperor's full name. It was an unprecedented honour." »— — Pliny the Elder, Natural History, 1st century
In 14 BC, Emperor Augustus founded Caesaraugusta on the banks of the Ebro, on the site of an ancient Iberian settlement called Salduie. The new colony received the rare privilege of bearing the emperor's full name — an honour that even Rome did not grant itself.
The city quickly became one of the most important in Hispania. A monumental forum, public baths fed by a sixty-kilometre aqueduct, a six-thousand-seat theatre and a river port made it a commercial and administrative hub of the first order.
When the Empire collapsed in the 5th century, the city was successively Visigothic, Muslim, then Christian. But the Roman foundations remained intact beneath the successive layers — waiting twenty centuries before being rediscovered by archaeologists.
