The story that haunts this land
Vindolanda reveals its first secrets from the entrance of this 3.5-hectare archaeological site, where remains of successive wooden then stone forts testify to continuous occupation from 85 to 370 AD. The excavated barracks immerse you in daily life of Germanic and Batavian auxiliaries who guarded this frontier before Hadrian's Wall. Each stone tells the story of soldiers from across the Empire who came to defend Roman Britain against northern Pictish tribes.
The Commandant's House unveils the relative luxury of senior officers, with its hypocaust-heated rooms and partially preserved wall frescoes.
