Your quest begins at Housesteads Roman Fort, known by its Roman name Vercovicium, a Grade I English historical monument. Built around 124 AD under Emperor Hadrian, this fort, 210 meters long by 180 meters wide, could house a thousand soldiers of Cohort I Tungrorum. Archaeological excavations since 1801 have revealed a complete infrastructure, from praetoria to underground latrines, testifying to the daily life of Roman legionaries. It is here, at this Northumberland archaeological site, that you will find the first clues to the lost orders, perhaps engraved on a stone or hidden within the barracks' remains.
Continue along the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail, following Hadrian's Wall itself, initiated in 122 AD and completed around 128 AD. This Roman frontier fortification stretched for 135 kilometers, from Newcastle to Bowness-on-Solway, with a height of 4.5 to 6 meters. You will pass Milecastle 37 in Bardon Mill, a typical auxiliary fort 18 meters by 15 meters, spaced about 1.6 kilometers from the next. These posts controlled border crossings between Roman Britannia and Caledoniae, and crucial information might be hidden within their foundations.
Your journey then takes you to Turret 37A, a watchtower built between two milecastles, also dated 122-128 AD. These 4-square-meter base towers allowed for continuous surveillance and rapid signaling by fire or smoke along the frontier. Not far, you will discover the Vallum, a defensive work dug simultaneously with the wall. This central ditch, 6 meters deep, flanked by two 3-meter-high earth embankments, follows the wall for 130 kilometers, marking a Roman territorial limit whose exact function has long been debated.
An essential step to decipher the orders awaits you at the Housesteads Roman Fort Museum, managed by English Heritage since 1930. This museum houses over 2,000 artifacts dating from the 2nd to 4th centuries, including ceramics and lapidary inscriptions. You will discover casts of the famous Vindolanda Tablets, found in 1883, which reveal military correspondence and supply lists, offering valuable insight into the life of the legionaries. It is among these collections that you might find the key to interpreting the fragments of information gathered so far in North West England.
Finally, your quest concludes near the Sycamore Gap Tree, a sycamore planted between the 18th and 19th centuries in a natural depression in the terrain. This tree, immortalized in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, is a major tourist symbol of the Hadrian's Wall area. Nearby, Limestone Corner in Bardon Mill, with its visible white limestone, served as a landmark for Roman patrols. By solving the riddles here, you will reconstruct the lost legion's final orders, completing your mission and offering a unique perspective on this Roman frontier, a testament to North West England's heritage.
