Gerace, the Aspromonte eagle
From the 7th century, coastal inhabitants fled Saracen raids and took refuge on the rock of Gerace, in the heart of the Aspromonte. The town became one of Calabria’s major Byzantine strongholds, seat of a Greek bishop, and home to a Romanesque cathedral consecrated in 1045 — the largest in Calabria — built from ancient columns.
In 1060, Robert Guiscard took the town by negotiation — never by force. The Normans, then the Swabians, kept its Byzantine fortress. The town is pierced by natural tunnels through the rock, used in turn as stores, refuges and hiding places through a thousand years of successive invasions.
