Alghero, the Catalan anomaly
Alghero was founded by the Genoese Doria family in the 12th century. In 1353, Peter IV of Aragon took the town after a naval battle; the next year, he decided to repopulate it entirely with Catalans from Barcelona and Valencia. The Sardinians were expelled, Catalan became the language, and the city turned into an Aragonese stronghold in Sardinia.
Seven centuries on, Alghero is the only city in Italy where people still speak alguerès daily, a variant of medieval Catalan. Its walls, Pigafetta bastions and towers — Torre di San Giovanni, Torre della Maddalena, Torre di Sulis — form a unique Catalan military ensemble in the Mediterranean, recognised by the Generalitat of Catalonia as Catalan heritage outside Spain.
