From Roman Settlement to Medieval Market Town
Târgu Jiu, in the Oltenia region of Romania, began as a Dacian village. After Roman conquests of Oltenia around 101–102 AD, military units were stationed in the area along trade routes connecting the Danube to Transylvania.
