From Dacian Settlement to Regional Center

Craiova developed from the ancient Dacian fortress of Pelendava, established between 400-350 BC. After the Roman conquest in the early 2nd century AD, a military camp named Castra Nova was built on this site. The settlement declined in the early Middle Ages but reappeared in records, with the first mention of Craiova under its current name on June 1, 1475. By the 15th century, Craiova became the residence of the powerful Bans of Craiova, making it the capital of Oltenia and a key administrative and military center for Wallachia.

A City Shaped by Trade and Rebuilding

Craiova's location at the crossroads of trade routes connecting Transylvania, the Balkans, and Constantinople fostered its growth as a market for artisans and merchants from the 15th and 16th centuries. The city was known for its craft guilds and fairs. Craiova faced challenges, including an earthquake in 1790, a plague in 1795, and a Turkish assault in 1802 that resulted in much of the city being burned. Despite these events, Craiova rebuilt. The 19th and early 20th centuries brought economic prosperity, attracting French and Italian architects who constructed residences, giving the urban landscape a European character. In 1896, Craiova was the first city in Romania to be powered by electricity from internal combustion engines. • —Nicolae Romanescu Park — Opened in 1903, this park was designed by French architect Édouard Redont. It received a gold medal at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris.

July and August are hot and sunny, with averages of 29°C to 31°C, good for exploring parks. Spring and autumn offer mild weather, averaging 12°C to 19°C, suitable for viewing architecture. Winters are cold, with freezing nights around -3°C in January. December is the cloudiest month. Avoid January, February, and December for milder conditions.

Craiova International Airport (CRA) is 7-9 kilometers east of the city center, with direct flights to European cities. Bucharest's Henri Coandă International Airport is an alternative, about 235 kilometers away, with onward travel by train or rental car. Craiova is connected by rail to cities like Bucharest, Brașov, and Budapest. The main intercity bus station is next to the train station.
