From Phoenician Outpost to Royal Port

Essaouira, known as Mogador, has a history spanning over 2,500 years. Phoenician traders arrived in the 5th century BCE, establishing a trading post due to the natural harbor and offshore islands. Around the end of the 1st century BCE, the Berber king Juba II set up a Tyrian purple dye factory on the Iles Purpuraires, processing murex shells from the intertidal rocks. This dye was used for the purple stripe in the togas of Roman Senators.

In the 16th century, the Portuguese built a fortress on the site; their presence was brief. The modern city of Essaouira, meaning "the well-designed" in classical Arabic, was founded in 1765 by the Alaouite Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdellah. The Sultan aimed to reorient his kingdom towards the Atlantic and establish a key trading port for European powers, particularly to channel trade from sub-Saharan Africa. He commissioned French engineer Théodore Cornut, a student of Vauban, to design the new city. Cornut's plans resulted in a fortified city with a grid system, a blend of European military architecture and Moroccan urban planning. The Medina earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001.

A Cosmopolitan Trading Hub

Essaouira became Morocco's primary seaport in the 19th century, serving as the harbor for Marrakech. European diplomatic and trade representations were established here, and European communities were ordered to relocate to Essaouira in 1765. The city was a meeting point of cultures, with Moroccans, Sephardic Jews, Amazigh Berbers, European merchants, and sub-Saharan traders. The Jewish community played a significant role in the city's economic and cultural life, making up 40% to 50% of the population in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This history of trade and diverse communities shaped Essaouira, with its architecture and cultural heritage still visible.

• —Skala de la Ville — This 18th-century sea bastion, built under Sultan Mohammed III, offers views of the Atlantic Ocean, the fishing port, and the Medina's rooftops. Visitors can walk along its ramparts and see the bronze cannons that once defended the city.
• —Port Skala (Sqala du Port) — This fortified bastion guards the harbor entrance. Also built in the 1760s, it features a large square tower and an artillery platform with bronze cannons. It provides views of the port with its blue fishing boats.
• —Bab Sbaâ Gate — One of the main entrances to the Medina, this gate leads into the old city and is a starting point for exploring the alleys.
• —Former Mellah (Jewish Quarter) — This historic district once housed a Jewish community. It shows architectural traces of its past, including residential buildings with the Star of David carved into their facades.
• —Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah Museum — Housed in a former pasha's residence, this museum exhibits local artifacts, including Roman coins and pottery found on Mogador island, offering insight into the region's history and culture.
• —Gnaoua Zawiya (Zawiya Sidna Bilal) — This is a spiritual center for Gnaoua music, a genre with roots in West African traditions. Its facade indicates the cultural significance of Gnaoua music in Essaouira, which is also celebrated annually at a major festival.
• —Old Grain Market (Souk Jdid) — This historic market area offers a view into the traditional commercial life of the Medina with its architecture.

Essaouira has a mild, stable, and windy Mediterranean-Atlantic climate year-round. The best times to visit for comfortable weather are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these periods, temperatures range from 18°C to 25°C (64°F to 77°F), and crowds are smaller than in summer. Spring brings wildflowers, while autumn offers good surf and light.

Summer (June to August) is peak season, with daytime highs around 24-27°C (75-81°F). The consistent trade winds make it suitable for wind and kite surfing. The Gnaoua World Music Festival often takes place in June, drawing crowds. To avoid the busiest times, visit outside of July and August and the Gnaoua Festival period.

Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU) is 15-16 km south of the city center. A fixed-rate taxi from the airport to the city costs around 150 MAD. An airport bus runs on a schedule tied to flights for 6 MAD.

Most visitors arrive by bus from Marrakech, a 2.5 to 3-hour journey. Supratours buses stop just outside the city walls. CTM buses arrive at a station a longer walk from the Medina. Pre-booking bus tickets is advisable during high season and festival times.

Within Essaouira, the Medina is pedestrianized and compact, walkable in about 20 minutes from end to end. Petit taxis (blue and white) are available for trips outside the Medina, using meters with a daytime minimum fare of 5 MAD. Ride-hailing apps do not operate here. For luggage within the Medina, wheelbarrow porters are available. Parking lots are available outside Bab Sbaâ and Bab Marrakech, guarded 24/7, costing around 25dh per day.
