From Phoenician Anchorage to Portuguese Stronghold

El Jadida's origins date to the 5th century BC, when Phoenicians used the site as an anchorage. The name Mazighan, an early designation for the area, was first recorded by the 11th-century Arab geographer al-Bakri. The city's transformation began in 1502 when Portuguese captain Jorge de Mello landed here. The Portuguese established a fortified colony, initially building a citadel in 1514, which was then expanded into a star-shaped fortress between 1541 and 1548. This stronghold, known as Mazagan (Mazagão in Portuguese), became a point along the Atlantic route to India, serving as a military outpost and a trading hub. Its Renaissance military architecture, with stone walls and bastions, was designed to withstand sieges, reflecting engineering for its time.

Abandonment, Rebirth, and a New Name

The Portuguese maintained control of Mazagan until 1769 when Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah (Mohammed III) expelled them. Before their departure, the Portuguese mined the bastions, causing an explosion that destroyed a part of the ramparts and led to casualties among Moroccan troops. The city was subsequently abandoned and earned the nickname "al-Mahdouma" (The Ruined). It remained uninhabited for nearly half a century. In 1822, Sultan Abd al-Rahman ordered the city's restoration, including the rebuilding of damaged sections of the fortifications and the construction of a mosque. The city was then renamed El Jadida, meaning "The New." This revival saw a diverse population of Muslims, Jews, and English people from Gibraltar settle in the city, contributing to its growth as a commercial center. In 2004, the Portuguese Fortified City of Mazagan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its blend of European and Moroccan cultures.

• —Portuguese Cistern — Descend into this subterranean structure, originally built as an armory in 1514 and converted into a water reservoir around 1541. Its vaulted ceilings and Gothic arches reflect in the shallow water on the floor.
• —Grand Mosque (former Church of the Assumption) — This building, originally constructed by the Portuguese in the early 16th century in Manueline style, now serves as a mosque. Its five-sided minaret is distinctive.
• —El Jadida Lighthouse (Phare de Sidi Bouafi) — Built between 1914 and 1916 by German prisoners during World War I, this white stone lighthouse stands 45 meters tall and offers views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city after climbing its 248 steps.
• —Market Square (current Nuno Álvares Pereira Square) — This square within the Portuguese City was historically a commercial center. Today, you can find various goods in the surrounding market area.
• —Sidi Bouzid Beach — Located about 5 km southwest of El Jadida, this sandy beach is used for strolling and watching the sunset. Lifeguards are on duty during summer; currents can be strong.

El Jadida has a mild ocean climate, making it suitable for visitors year-round. The period from early July to mid-September is for warm weather activities, with average daily high temperatures around 26-27°C (79-80°F). The skies are clearest in July. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds, suitable for exploring historical sites and coastal walks. Winters (December to February) are cooler, with average lows around 13°C (55°F) and occasional rainfall. The wettest month is November. Avoid July and August if you prefer to escape the highest crowds and prices.

El Jadida is about 90-96 km south of Casablanca. The nearest airport is Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (CMN), approximately 100 km away. From Casablanca, you can reach El Jadida by car via the A5 motorway in about 1.5 hours. CTM buses run daily from Casablanca's Ouled Ziane bus station, taking 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. Grand taxis also operate from the same area. There is a train station in El Jadida, offering connections to Casablanca and other major Moroccan cities; direct service to Marrakech requires a transfer in Casablanca. The train station is about 3 km from the city center, requiring a short taxi ride.

Within El Jadida, the Portuguese City and beachfront promenade are explored on foot. The city itself is spread out, so taxis are available for longer distances. Parking is available near the old town walls and along the seafront boulevard. Local markets, like the one near the Grand Mosque, are active daily.
