From Carthaginian Port to Portuguese Stronghold

Safi's origins date back to antiquity. Some historians suggest the Carthaginian navigator Hanno founded it in the 5th century BC, possibly under the name Thymiaterium or Carcunticus. By the 11th and 12th centuries, Safi, then known as Asfi, became a significant port and cultural center, serving as a gateway for Marrakech, the capital of the Almoravids and Almohads.

The city's coastal location attracted European powers. In 1488, the Portuguese gained control, establishing a trading post. In 1508, they made it a fortress of the Portuguese Crown. They maintained their rule until 1541, when pressure from the Saadian sharifs and a lack of resources led King John III to abandon Safi. During this period, the Portuguese constructed fortifications, including the Ksar El Bahr (Sea Castle) and parts of the Kechla fortress, which remain visible today.

A Legacy of Craft and Industry

After the Portuguese departure in 1541, Safi remained an important Moroccan Atlantic port. Its prosperity peaked in the first half of the 17th century under the Saadian sultans, continuing its role as a vital link for trade with Europe. The city has long been known for its craftsmanship, particularly its pottery, which dates back to at least the medieval Islamic period.

In the early 20th century, the pottery tradition saw a revival with the establishment of a ceramics school in 1920 by Moroccan master Boujemaa Lamali. He introduced new techniques and helped establish Safi's reputation as Morocco's pottery capital. Beyond ceramics, Safi developed as a major fishing port, especially for the sardine industry. It became an important center for phosphate exports following the establishment of the OCP Group's chemical complex in 1965.

• —Medina — A network of narrow alleys, the Medina is a center where traditional artisans work. It contains a mix of medieval and modern architecture within its fortified walls.
• —Potters' Souk Street and Potters' Hill (Colline des Potiers) — This area is the center of Safi's pottery industry. Observe artisans shaping local red clay into tagines, bowls, and vases. Climbing to the top of the hill offers views of Safi and the Atlantic.
• —National Ceramics Museum (Former Portuguese Cathedral) — Housed within the Kechla fortress, this museum displays the development of Safi ware, from medieval Islamic origins to contemporary pieces. The building contains the Portuguese Chapel, constructed in 1519, within the former cathedral's chancel.
• —Kechla Fortress — This Portuguese citadel, built in 1508 and expanded by the Saadians, has crenellated towers and views over the city and sea. It served as a prison until 1990 and now houses the National Ceramics Museum.
• —Old Port Area — Safi has been a major fishing port for centuries, particularly for sardines. The port area shows daily life and the city's maritime activity.

The best time to visit Safi for outdoor activities is from early May to mid-September, with late June being the most pleasant. For hot-weather activities like swimming, late June to mid-September is suitable, with August averaging 28°C (82°F) during the day. The sea is warmest in July, at around 21°C.

For surfing, October to March offers consistent north and northwest Atlantic swells. However, November to February can bring rougher weather. Safi has a dry season from March to October. October is the cloudiest month, while July is the clearest.

To avoid large crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April-May and October-November. The city is generally busiest from October to June.

Safi is accessible by train and bus from major Moroccan cities. Trains from Marrakech, Casablanca, or Rabat often connect via Benguerir. Bus services, such as CTM, also link Safi to cities like Casablanca, Marrakech, and Essaouira.

Once in Safi, the city center and its main attractions, including the Medina and Ksar El Bahr, are walkable. For longer distances, grand taxis are available. Safi's former airport has been converted into a residential area.

Parking is available around the city. Safi's markets, especially in the Medina, are active daily. Some smaller shops may close for a siesta in the afternoon. Public transport within the city operates on schedules, and private transfers are an option for direct travel.
