Essaouira — The Corsair's Logbook

🎭Your Mission

You are a young corsair captain serving Sultan Mohammed III in Essaouira, 1760, on a secret mission to thwart enemy attacks and protect the riches of trans-Saharan

Immerse yourself in the 18th century and embark on a treasure hunt in the footsteps of Essaouira's Barbary corsairs, the fortified port city of Morocco.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest begins on Place Moulay Hassan, the beating heart of Essaouira's medina, named in honor of Sultan Moulay Hassan I. Surrounded by white-faced buildings typical of the 18th century, this square was the starting point for the city's reconstruction by Mohammed III in 1760. Immediately adjacent to the Clock Tower Square, this urban ensemble has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, attesting to the architectural ingenuity and vision of the era. It is here, among the bustling cafes, that you will receive your first instructions to defend the port city.

Walking along the Skala de la Ville, you will discover the massive ramparts built between 1767 and 1772 under Mohammed III. These fortifications, approximately 1.8 km long and punctuated by 28 bastions, house batteries of cannons forged at the royal arsenal of Tétouan in 1769, proudly bearing the Alaouite coat of arms. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2001 as an exceptional example of military architecture, these ramparts offer breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Your mission will then lead you through Bab Sbaâ, the 'Gate of Lions', a monumental 8-meter high gate built in 1769, adorned with zellij geometric patterns and Alaouite calligraphic inscriptions, the main access to the port from Essaouira's medina.

The Skala du Port, a strategic artillery platform built in 1767 and equipped with 32 bronze cannons, was essential for protecting the port entrance against Barbary corsair attacks in the 18th century. From there, the panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and the Purple Islands recalls the importance of this emblematic site of ancient purple trade. Continuing your exploration of this city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, you will reach Borj el Barmil, the 'Barrel Tower', an advanced bastion of the ramparts erected in 1770. This strategic position, equipped with 12 heavy cannons, was a key point of coastal defense against European powers and even served as a royal Moroccan powder storage site in the 18th century.

Your journey will then take you to the Clock Tower, a 20-meter high tower built in a defensive style with battlements in 1770. The clock, installed in 1792 on the square adjacent to Place Moulay Hassan, became a temporal symbol for the district of European consuls established in Essaouira as early as 1767. By crossing the old Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, you will feel the atmosphere of an era when Essaouira was a major commercial and cultural crossroads, a fundamental aspect of Essaouira's history and the Marrakech-Safi heritage.

Finally, your circuit will conclude at the Port of Essaouira, a deep-water port developed in 1767, capable of accommodating up to 200 merchant ships simultaneously. An ancient Phoenician trading post from the 8th century BC, rediscovered by the Portuguese in 1506 under the name of Mogador, this port was the center of trans-Saharan trade until the French protectorate in 1956. This interactive visit to Essaouira will have allowed you to trace the maritime and commercial stakes that shaped this UNESCO World Heritage city in 2001. You will have discovered 18th-century military architecture, the life of corsairs, and the heritage of a kitesurfing capital of Morocco, blending history and modernity.
