Crossroads of the Sahara

Ouarzazate, a name derived from the Tamazight phrase meaning "without noise" or "without confusion," has historically been a significant crossing point. For centuries, it served as a junction for African traders traversing routes between northern Morocco and Europe. In the 16th century, Sheikh Abu al-'Abaas Ahmed bin Abdellah al-Wizkiti al-Warzazi played a role in establishing Saadi control over the Sous-Dra'a region, highlighting the area's early strategic importance. The city's location at the confluence of the Draa and Dades valleys made it a natural point for caravans, facilitating trade in goods such as gold, salt, and slaves across the Sahara.

French Administration and Film Industry Development

The city's modern expansion began in 1928 when it became a French garrison town, administrative center, and customs post during the French Protectorate of Morocco (1912-1956). A church, Eglise Saint Therese, was built in 1931 during this period, serving the European population. After Morocco gained independence in 1956, Ouarzazate's destiny shifted. The quality of light and diverse landscapes, ranging from mountains to desert and oases, attracted filmmakers. British director David Lean was among the first to recognize its cinematic potential, filming parts of "Lawrence of Arabia" here in 1962. This marked the beginning of Ouarzazate's transformation into a major hub for international film productions, earning it the nickname "Ouallywood." The establishment of Atlas Corporation Studios in 1983 solidified its role in the global film industry, drawing productions like "Gladiator" and "Game of Thrones" to its sets.

• —Kasbah of Taourirt — This 19th-century fortified residence was once a stronghold of the Glaoui family. You can explore its mud-brick rooms and Berber decorations. The kasbah offers views from its terraces.
• —Atlas Corporation Studio — Established in 1983, this is one of the world's largest film studios by acreage. You can walk through permanent sets that have stood in for ancient Egypt, Rome, and other locations in films like "Gladiator" and "Game of Thrones."
• —Fint Oasis — Located about 12 km south of Ouarzazate, this oasis has palm groves and traditional mud villages. A river flows through it. It has served as a filming location for movies like "Babel" and "Kingdom of Heaven."
• —Ouarzazate Souk — The souk is typically held near Avenue Mohammed V. You can find Moroccan handicrafts and local goods.
• —Mohammed V Avenue — This is the main commercial street in Ouarzazate, with cafes, restaurants, and handicraft shops.
• —Ksar of Ait Benhaddou — A UNESCO World Heritage site west of Ouarzazate, this fortified village is an example of southern Moroccan architecture and has been featured in numerous films.

The most comfortable times to visit Ouarzazate are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these seasons, daytime temperatures range from 18°C to 28°C in spring and 20°C to 30°C in autumn. The skies are clear, and the light is suitable for photography and outdoor activities.

Avoid visiting in summer (June to August) if you are sensitive to extreme heat, as temperatures often reach 35°C to 40°C. Winters (December to February) are mild during the day, averaging 10°C to 18°C, but nights can be cold, dropping close to 2°C.

Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ) is a compact international airport a few minutes' drive from the city center, offering domestic flights from Casablanca and Marrakech, and some international routes. Taxis are available at the airport; 'petit taxis' serve within the city, while 'grand taxis' can take you to destinations outside.

Walking is feasible in the downtown area around Mohammed V Avenue and Al-Mouahidine Square. For longer distances or trips to nearby attractions, taxis are recommended. If driving, Ouarzazate Airport provides two paid parking areas. Haggling is common in souks and markets. Modest dress is appreciated, particularly when visiting religious sites or rural villages.
