Your quest begins at Trg bana Josipa Jelačića, Zagreb's main square, named in honor of Josip Jelačić, Governor of Croatia from 1848 to 1859. The 8-meter-high bronze equestrian statue, erected in 1866, was a crucial rallying point in 1991 during pro-independence demonstrations. It was here, on this nearly 20,000 m² surface, that Yugoslav tensions found a powerful echo, when the statue, moved in 1947 under Tito, was reinstated in 1990, symbolizing national renewal. Your first mission is to decipher a message hidden in the symbols of this central location in Gornji Grad - Gradec.
Continue towards Kamenita vrata, the Stone Gate, the only preserved entrance to Gradec's medieval fortifications, built around 1266 after a fire. This 10-meter-high Gothic ogival arch, restored in the 17th century, is also a Marian pilgrimage site, housing a miraculous icon of the Black Madonna, saved from a fire in 1731. In 1991, it was a symbol of Croatian resistance in the heart of the city center, testifying to national perseverance. Here, you will search for clues carved into the stone, linked to ancient conspiracies that have passed through its thick walls.
Your investigation then leads you to Hrvatski sabor, the Croatian Parliament. This Neo-Renaissance building, completed in 1911 by architect Kosta Bajić, is 51 meters long and has a capacity for 151 deputies. It has been the seat of the Sabor since 1848 and was the venue for the first sessions of the independent parliament after the referendum of May 19, 1991. Statues of medieval Croatian rulers like Tomislav (10th century) adorn its facade, recalling a long history of sovereignty. It is here that you will have to infiltrate a network and find incriminating evidence among the digital archives.
A few steps away, Crkva sv. Marka, St. Mark's Church, dating from the 13th century, is distinguished by its polychrome roof added in 1880, adorned with the coats of arms of Zagreb and the Triune Kingdom. With its 26-meter length and 15-meter interior height, this single nave and its twin bell tower built between 1357 and 1377 served as the municipal belfry in the Middle Ages. In 1991, near the parliament, it was the site of ceremonies related to Croatian independence. A clandestine meeting is scheduled there, where a contact will reveal a key piece of the puzzle.
The route ends at Trg kralja Tomislava, Zagreb's largest square (40,000 m²), in front of the main train station (1892), featuring the 11-meter equestrian statue of King Tomislav, crowned in 925. This square, which hosted the Meštrović Pavilion (1908), was a major site for Croatian independence rallies in 1991. By solving the final enigma here, you will unmask the traitor and understand the extent of the struggle for freedom. This downtown pedestrian itinerary will have offered you a deep immersion into the history of Zagreb, from the role of Nikola Šubić Zrinski to the legacy of Josip Juraj Strossmayer, all while experiencing a decisive chapter of Zagreb's historical heritage.
