Thessaloniki — Demetrius Martyrs' Secret

Your journey begins in Aristotelous Square, a 2-hectare space lined with 4-story neoclassical buildings, designed by French architect Ernest Hébrard. This central location for public gatherings, named after the philosopher Aristotle who taught nearby, was the scene of major demonstrations such as that of November 17, 1973. From there, you head towards the Church of Saint Demetrius, a 5th-century basilica rebuilt in the 7th century, dedicated to the Christian martyr executed around 306. This edifice, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988, has housed the relics of Saint Demetrius since 1988, within a nave 43 m long by 32 m wide, topped by an 11 m diameter dome.

Beneath the Church of Saint Demetrius, you access the Crypt of Saint Demetrius, discovered in 1918. This original place of worship, used since the 5th century, spans approximately 200 m² and contains 7th-century Byzantine frescoes as well as the original baptismal fonts. 300 m from the Arch of Galerius stands the Rotunda of Saint George, built around 306 AD as a mausoleum for Emperor Galerius. Converted into a Christian church in the 4th century, this structure with an internal diameter of 24.5 m is adorned with 5th-century Byzantine mosaics depicting martyrs and saints. Classified as UNESCO in 1988, it preserves 80 m² of these precious mosaics. Your journey then continues towards the White Tower, built by the Venetians in 1530. Standing 33 m high with 6 floors, it served as an Ottoman prison until 1882 before being restored in 1980 and becoming a maritime museum. A symbol of Thessaloniki, it is located 1.2 km southwest of Aristotelous Square.

Near the Rotunda, you explore the Roman Agora, a commercial center dating from the 2nd-3rd century AD and covering 6 hectares. Excavations conducted from 1961 to 1980 revealed an odeon for 500 spectators, built around 200 AD, whose well-preserved remains lie in the heart of Thessaloniki's city center. This site attests to the importance of Central Macedonia under the Roman Empire. Later, you discover the Church of Hagia Sophia, an 8th-century Byzantine edifice, a model of cruciform-domed architecture. Episcopal seat from 1366 to 1430, it houses 11th-century frescoes and features a 10 m diameter dome, 800 m south of Aristotelous Square.
