Early Hermits and Monastic Foundations

The rock pillars of Meteora, in the plain of Thessaly, formed approximately 60 million years ago. These formations attracted ascetic hermit monks as early as the 9th century CE. These early hermits lived in isolated hollows and fissures within the rock towers, some as high as 550 meters above the plain. Initially, they lived a solitary life, gathering on Sundays for worship at a chapel built at the foot of a rock known as Dupiani. By the late 11th and early 12th centuries, a monastic community, the Skete of Stagoi, formed around the church of Theotokos (Mother of God).

Monastic Expansion and Ottoman Rule

Monastic development in Meteora began in the 14th century. Athanasios Koinovitis, also known as Athanasios the Meteorite, arrived from Mount Athos around 1340, seeking refuge. Between 1356 and 1372, he founded the Monastery of Great Meteoron (Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration) on the Broad Rock, the oldest and largest of the Meteora monasteries. This established organized monasticism, offering a safe haven during political upheaval. At its peak in the 16th century, there were 24 monasteries, which continued under Ottoman rule from 1453 to 1832. The Ottoman administration generally allowed the Orthodox religion to continue. During this period, the monasteries served as sanctuaries for persecuted Greeks and rebels. The 16th century also saw an artistic period, with painters like Theophanes the Cretan and Frangos Katelanos creating frescoes on monastery walls. In the 1920s, steps were carved into the rock, making the monasteries more accessible; previously, access was by removable ladders or hoisting ropes. Today, six of the original 24 monasteries remain active. Meteora was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

Meteora presents a landscape where geological formations meet centuries of spiritual life. Several specific sites offer insight into its history and architecture:

• —Great Meteoron Monastery (Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration) — This is the oldest and largest of the Meteora monasteries, founded in the 14th century. Inside, visitors can see its main church (katholikon) with 16th-century frescoes, a museum with relics, and the old kitchen.
• —Varlaam Monastery — The second largest, founded in the 14th century by the hermit Varlaam and renovated in the early 16th century. It contains 16th-century frescoes by Frangos Katelanos, a large 12-ton oak barrel used for water storage, and the historic net-tower with its original pulley system.
• —Rousanou Monastery — This monastery, built in 1545, appears as a single construction on its rock. It is now a nunnery and is known for its frescoes and its bridge access.
• —Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada) — Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, this monastery stands on an isolated pillar. It was featured in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only and requires a climb of 140 steps.
• —Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas — Located on a small, narrow rock, this monastery was founded in the late 14th century. Its multi-level construction, due to limited space, features frescoes by the Cretan painter Theophanes Strelitzas, dating to 1527.
• —Theopetra Cave — Located near Meteora, this cave provides archaeological evidence of Neanderthals and contains the oldest evidence of a man-made structure, a stone barrier that blocked its entrance, dating back 23,000 years.

The best times to visit Meteora are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October). In spring, temperatures range from 15°C to 23°C, wildflowers are present, and monastery hours are extended from April 1st. Autumn offers temperatures between 10°C and 21°C, with golden light on the rocks, especially after October 28th when crowds decrease.

Avoid the summer months of July and August, when temperatures can reach 30-34°C, and the sites are crowded. Monastery hours shorten from November 1st, and winter (December to February) can be cold with occasional snowfall, though it offers misty skies and fewer visitors.

Meteora is accessible, with Kalambaka serving as the main town for arrivals. The direct Athens-Kalambaka train line is suspended until at least mid-2027. You can reach Kalambaka by KTEL public bus via Trikala (approximately 5-6 hours from Athens) or by rental car (around 4 hours). From Thessaloniki, a direct bus or train via Trikala takes 3-4 hours, or driving takes 2.5-3 hours.

In Kalambaka or Kastraki, you can travel to the monasteries by rental car, local taxi, guided tour, or on foot along old monk footpaths. A paved ring road links all six active monasteries. Each monastery has a small parking area, which can fill during peak hours (10:00-14:00) in July and August. Taxis are an option for point-to-point travel. The local public bus route between monasteries is no longer operating.
