The Sanctuary's Development

Delphi shows evidence of human presence since the Neolithic period, around 4000 BCE. The site became significant in the Mycenaean era (c. 1600-1100 BCE) as a cult center, possibly dedicated to Gaia, the Earth goddess. The worship of Apollo arrived later, likely in the 8th century BCE, establishing Delphi as a major religious center of the ancient Greek world. The Pythian Games, founded in 582 BCE, reinforced Delphi's status, drawing athletes and artists from across the Greek world for athletic, musical, and dramatic competitions held every four years. These games were second only to the Olympic Games in importance.

The sanctuary operated for centuries, supported by offerings from city-states and individuals seeking the Oracle's guidance. The Sacred Way, the main path to the Temple of Apollo, was lined with treasuries – small buildings constructed by various Greek city-states to hold their offerings. The Athenian Treasury, built after the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, housed spoils from their victory over the Persians. The sanctuary's influence diminished with the rise of Christianity. In 392 CE, the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, issued decrees outlawing pagan cults, ending the Oracle of Delphi's ancient religious practices.

Rediscovery and Modern Preservation

After its decline, Delphi was largely covered by rockfalls and sediment. A small village, Kastri, was built over part of the ancient site. The first systematic excavations began in 1892, led by the French School at Athens. This work required the relocation of the village of Kastri to a new site, now modern Delphi, to uncover the ruins of the sanctuary. These excavations revealed the Temple of Apollo, the Ancient Theater, the Stadium, and other structures, providing information about ancient Greek religion, architecture, and daily life. Today, the Archaeological Museum of Delphi displays many artifacts found during these digs, including the Charioteer of Delphi, a bronze statue from around 470 BCE.

• —Temple of Apollo — This was the center of the sanctuary, where the Pythia, the priestess of Apollo, delivered prophecies. The remaining foundations and several Doric columns indicate its former scale. The adyton, the inner sanctum where the Oracle sat, is still discernible.
• —Athenian Treasury — A small building made of Parian marble. It was built by the Athenians to house their votive offerings to Apollo, particularly after their victory at the Battle of Marathon. Its metopes depict the deeds of Heracles and Theseus.
• —Castalian Spring — This spring supplied water for the purification rituals of the Pythia and other visitors. The ancient fountain house, a rock-cut niche where the water emerges, is visible.
• —Ancient Theater — Above the Temple of Apollo, this theater provided views of the sanctuary and the valley. It seated approximately 5,000 spectators and was used for musical and dramatic competitions of the Pythian Games.
• —Ancient Stadium — Further up the slope from the theater, the stadium hosted the athletic events of the Pythian Games. It is one of the best-preserved ancient stadiums in Greece, with stone seating for about 6,500 spectators and a track measuring 177.5 meters.
• —Archaeological Museum of Delphi — This museum houses artifacts found during the sanctuary's excavations. Exhibits include the bronze Charioteer of Delphi, fragments of the colossal chryselephantine statues of Apollo and Artemis, and various votive offerings.

The best time to visit Delphi is during spring (April to early June) or autumn (September to October). Temperatures are mild, suitable for exploring the outdoor archaeological site. The landscape in spring has wildflowers. Crowds are smaller than in summer. Avoid July and August, as temperatures can be high, and the site becomes crowded with tour groups. Winters (November to March) can be cold and rainy, and some facilities may have reduced hours. Strong winds can make it feel colder.

Delphi is in Central Greece, about 180 kilometers northwest of Athens. The most common way to reach Delphi is by bus from the KTEL Liosion bus station in Athens; the journey takes about 3 hours. There is no train station or airport directly in Delphi. The archaeological site and museum are within walking distance of the modern town. The site is hilly, with uneven paths, so comfortable walking shoes are necessary. Parking is available near the archaeological site and in the modern town, though it can be limited during peak season. Most shops and restaurants in modern Delphi follow typical Greek opening hours, with a midday siesta often observed, especially outside of the main tourist season.
