Cassandra, the Trojan princess cursed to speak truth no one would believe, was dragged from Troy's burning temples by Agamemnon, king of Mycenae
You are Cassandra, the cursed Trojan princess and prophetess, returned to Mycenae in the wake of your own murder, 12th century BCE.
Your mission: relive the events that led
Delve into the heart of Mycenae, the city of Agamemnon, and unmask Cassandra's ominous prophecy that still haunts its Cyclopean walls.
« Mycenae, rich in gold, where Agamemnon of wide domains holds sway »— Homer, Iliad, Book II, line 569 (~8th century BC)
Your quest begins at the Sanctuary of Hera, an archaic temple built around 800 BC on the remains of an earlier Mycenaean sanctuary dating back to 1400 BC. Excavations by Christos Tsountas (1886-1902) revealed cult statues and votive offerings, testifying to 600 years of continuous worship. This UNESCO 1985 archaeological site, located in Mycenae in the Peloponnese, is dedicated to Hera, the city's protector. It is here that the first visions of your destiny will manifest, guiding you towards the buried secrets of the Mycenaean civilization.
Pass through the legendary Lion Gate, dated to approximately 1250 BC. This fortified main entrance to the palace of Mycenae, 3.1 m wide and 3 m high, is topped by a unique sculptural relief: two confronting lionesses framing a central column, a symbol of royal power. It is the only known example of monumental sculpture from the late Mycenaean period in mainland Greece. These Cyclopean walls, built between 1350 and 1200 BC with massive blocks without mortar, have a preserved height of up to 7 m and demonstrate remarkable seismic resistance, attributed to the mythical Cyclopes by the ancient Greeks.
Next, enter the Mycenaean Royal Palace, built around 1350 BC and destroyed by fire around 1100 BC. This site, the legendary residence of King Agamemnon according to Homer's Iliad, spans approximately 1,000 m² of visible remains, including the Throne Room (Megaron). Excavations revealed Linear B tablets dating from 1200 BC, offering insight into archaic Mycenaean writing and court affairs. Nearby, the Royal Magazines, a storage complex dating from 1350 BC with 13 rectangular rooms, contained amphorae for the grain, oil, and wine reserves of the royal palace of Mycenae.
Your path leads you to the Underground Cistern, built around 1350 BC as a water supply system in case of siege. Approximately 18 m deep, it is accessible by a monumental staircase of 34 steps carved into the rock. Its estimated capacity of 200 m³ of water collected by surface pipes testifies to the advanced hydraulic engineering of the Mycenaean civilization. Not far, the Tomb of Aegisthus, dated to approximately 1220 BC, is a royal tholos tomb with a 27 m long access corridor. According to Greek mythology, Aegisthus murdered Agamemnon upon his return from Troy, an accomplice of Clytemnestra, and excavations revealed remains of funerary furniture dating from 1200 BC.
