Uncover the Venetian plot behind the deadly harbor chain and Bourtzi's executioner secrets. Solve the conspiracy that sealed Nafplio from invaders.

In 1473, Venetian engineer Antonio Gambello erected Bourtzi Castle on a tiny islet in Nafplio's harbor, but its true purpose was far darker than mere defense
You are Gambello, the accomplished Italian engineer commissioned by the Republic of Venice in 1473 to fortify Nafplio's port against Cyclades pirates.
Your mission: inspect the tripartite
Follow the footsteps of Venetian engineers who built the most sophisticated defensive system in the Eastern Mediterranean, from Bourtzi fortress to the chains of Porto Cadena.
Nafplio became Venetian in 1388 under the domination of the Serene Republic. The rocky islet of Bourtzi, 4,000 m² located 500 meters offshore from the old port, immediately caught the attention of Venetian strategists. In 1473, engineer Gambello completed this revolutionary fortification to protect the port from marine invasions and Cyclades pirates who ravaged Mediterranean commerce. The architecture combines Italian military techniques with the geographical constraints of the Argolic Gulf, creating a unique island sentinel.
Nafplio's defensive system relies on a chain stretched each night between Bourtzi and the mainland, giving the port its Venetian name 'Porto Cadena' - the chain port. This military innovation hermetically seals access to enemy ships, transforming the harbor into a protected basin. A dike built during the first Venetian occupation modified the port geography, leaving a narrow channel controlled by the fortress. Acronafplia completes this system by protecting the lower town from its strategic position.
In 1697, during the second Venetian period, engineers added an octagonal tower to Bourtzi, perfecting the defensive architecture. This tower surveys maritime approaches while Palamidi fortress, crowning the city with its 857 steps, forms with Bourtzi and Acronafplia the most sophisticated tripartite system in the Peloponnese. Each fortification covers the blind spots of others, creating a flawless defensive network around the strategic port.
Bourtzi sheltered the Greek government twice in 1824 and 1827 during the War of Independence, testifying to its political importance beyond its military function. After 1865, the fortress became a prison until 1930, then a luxury hotel from 1935 to 1970, adapting its Venetian architecture to new uses. Syntagma Square, built under Ioannis Kapodistrias after liberation, connects the historic port to the modern administrative center, perpetuating the Venetian urban legacy in Greek Nafplio.
Today restored to host summer music festivals and cultural events, Bourtzi remains accessible by boat every 30 minutes from the old port jetty. You take from this journey an understanding of Venetian military genius that shaped Nafplio for three centuries, from cafés with terraces overlooking Bourtzi to the cobbled streets of the historic quarter where the footsteps of the Serene Republic's engineers still echo.
