Mértola — The Seven Lost Civilizations

🎭Your Mission

You are a Royal Cartographer, dispatched by Prince Henry the Navigator in 1430, tasked with charting the historical riches of the Alentejo.

Your expedition starts at Praça

Dive into the heart of Mértola, a museum-city on the Guadiana, where the remains of seven civilizations await discovery beneath your feet.

The story that haunts this land

Mértola, the ancient port city of Myrtilis on the Guadiana river, has been a crossroads of civilizations since antiquity. Your archaeological heritage exploration begins at the Núcleo Museológico do Castelo de Mértola, which houses collections of 11th and 12th-century Islamic artifacts, as well as medieval everyday objects. This museum displays evidence of seven periods of occupation, from the Phoenicians to the Romans, the Visigoths to the medieval Christians. The city of Mértola offers a deep immersion into the history of the Alentejo.

The route then takes you to the Casa Romana in Mértola, where the remains of a Roman dwelling from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD still stand. You can observe partial mosaics and opus caementicium foundations, evidence of Myrtilis' importance as a fluvial trade center on the Guadiana. This stage illustrates Mértola's integration into the Roman Empire, a key period for understanding the city's urban foundations and its role in the Alentejo region. It's a window into the ancient river port and its intense activity.

Moving towards the historic center, the Igreja Matriz de Mértola, or Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, catches the eye with its late Manueline architecture from the 16th century. This church was built on the remains of an 11th-12th century Islamic mosque, a striking example of cultural superposition. Its 17th-century Baroque altarpiece and traditional Portuguese azulejos tell stories of centuries of devotion and artistic evolution. The proximity of Praça Luís de Camões, named in homage to the poet of the Lusiads, anchors this monument in Portuguese literary history.

The exploration continues in the Bairro Islâmico, Mértola's Islamic quarter, where excavations have revealed dwelling structures, paved streets, and a drainage system dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, under Almohad rule. Nearby, the Forno de Cerâmica Islâmico, a pottery kiln from the same period, demonstrates medieval Islamic firing techniques and local ceramic production, essential for Guadiana river trade. These sites offer a rare perspective on daily life and craftsmanship during the Islamic era in Mértola.

Finally, the Castelo de Mértola, an 11th-century fortress built under the Almohads and recaptured by Christians in the 12th century, dominates the confluence of the Guadiana. Classified as a Portuguese national monument, it was a strategic defensive structure, rising approximately 50 meters above the town. Your interactive visit to Mértola, a true outdoor escape game, will have allowed you to reconstruct the epic of these lost civilizations. From Luís de Camões to the caliph Al-Mutawakkil, from the Reconquista by Afonso III of Portugal to the influence of Henry the Navigator, every step in this Alentejo town has been a discovery of the layers of time.
