Vindolanda — The Scribes' Cipher

🎭Your Mission

You are Flavius Cerialis, prefect of the IXth Cohort of Batavians, on a secret mission on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, around 100 AD

Discover Vindolanda, where the whispers of Roman legions still echo through the remains of Hadrian's Wall.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest begins near Vindolanda Railway Station, a modern crossing point connecting the village of Bardon Mill to the Roman remains. As you cross Chesterholm Bridge, a modern bridge less than 300m from the fort's entrance, you visualize the routes taken by legions and civilians nearly two millennia ago. Northumberland National Park, surrounding Vindolanda, provides a preserved setting for this immersion into the past. You follow in the footsteps of these ancient travelers, sensing the atmosphere of a crossroads between the Roman world and Celtic lands.

St Andrew's Church, built in 1794 in the village of Chesterholm, stands approximately 500m from the Roman fort of Vindolanda. Although Anglican and enlarged in 1892, it testifies to the continuity of community life in this region, long after the Romans left. It invites you to a contemplative pause before diving back into antiquity. This place of worship, which has served the local population for over 200 years, embodies human persistence in the face of time, a common thread since the Roman occupation from 85 AD.

You then enter the Roman Vicus, the civilian settlement adjacent to the fort, where over 150 buildings have been excavated across 1.5 km². Here, workshops, taverns, and houses dating from the 2nd-3rd century AD reveal the daily lives of soldiers' families and traders. Votive altars and inscriptions dedicated to local deities have been discovered, highlighting the cultural richness of this Roman archaeological site. It is in this maze that you search for the first clues, imagining Claudia Severa, an officer's wife, writing her letters 1,900 years ago.

The heart of your investigation leads you to the 3rd-century AD Commandant's House (Praetorium), with its hypocaust and mosaics. Occupied by Roman officers like Flavius Cerialis, this dwelling attests to military luxury and organization. The remains of private baths and underfloor heated rooms, discovered during the 1970s excavations, transport you directly into the intimacy of Roman power. It is here, within Vindolanda fort, that the oldest known Roman personal letters, the wooden writing tablets, were written between 90 and 120 AD.

Your journey concludes at the Vindolanda Museum, opened in 1975, where over 500 original Roman writing tablets are displayed. This institution, managed by the Vindolanda Charitable Trust, attracts over 75,000 annual visitors and showcases discoveries such as the 3rd-century Roman stone watering trough or over 400 pairs of Roman shoes. The Vindolanda Tablets collection, inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World in 2016, is the highlight of your visit. You leave Vindolanda with the satisfaction of having deciphered a fragment of the history of Hadrian's Wall, an exceptional heritage of Northumberland.

Frequently asked questions

Q01Vindolanda — The Scribes' Cipher — is it a guided trail or a free-form hunt?

It's a semi-guided trail: GPS points you to the next stop, but you find the camera clue and solve the puzzle yourself. No app to install, everything runs in your browser.

Q02Can we split Vindolanda — The Scribes' Cipher across two days?

Yes — your code stays active and progress is saved. You can start Saturday afternoon, finish Sunday morning. Some players actually prefer this format to make the most of a full weekend on site.

Q03Is Vindolanda — The Scribes' Cipher suitable for a challenge-seeking teen?

Absolutely. The puzzles aren't obvious — a curious teen will sweat just enough to be proud of cracking them. Progressive hints prevent frustration: if stuck, unlock hint level 1, then 2, then 3.

Q04Do we need 4G data to play?

Intermittent 4G is plenty. Maps are cached at startup. Narration and clues load per stop, so a so-so signal between stops is fine. GPS itself uses no data.
