St Andrew's Church, built in 1794 in the village of Chesterholm, stands approximately 500m from the Roman fort of Vindolanda. Although Anglican and enlarged in 1892, it testifies to the continuity of community life in this region, long after the Romans left. It invites you to a contemplative pause before diving back into antiquity. This place of worship, which has served the local population for over 200 years, embodies human persistence in the face of time, a common thread since the Roman occupation from 85 AD.

You then enter the Roman Vicus, the civilian settlement adjacent to the fort, where over 150 buildings have been excavated across 1.5 km². Here, workshops, taverns, and houses dating from the 2nd-3rd century AD reveal the daily lives of soldiers' families and traders. Votive altars and inscriptions dedicated to local deities have been discovered, highlighting the cultural richness of this Roman archaeological site. It is in this maze that you search for the first clues, imagining Claudia Severa, an officer's wife, writing her letters 1,900 years ago.

The heart of your investigation leads you to the 3rd-century AD Commandant's House (Praetorium), with its hypocaust and mosaics.
