In the icy dawn of December 1
Decembrists: Whispers of Liberty under Moscow's Snows
« The human soul yearns for freedom, and Russia cannot forever be an empire of slaves. »— Pavel Pestel, Decembrist leader (reconstructed)
In the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, Russian officers, having fought in Europe, returned imbued with liberal ideas and Enlightenment ideals. Faced with Tsarist autocracy and the persistence of serfdom, they formed secret societies such as the Union of Salvation (1816) and the Union of Welfare. These groups, divided between a more moderate Northern Society and a more radical Southern Society, aspired to a profound transformation of Russia, ranging from constitutional monarchy to a republic and the abolition of serfdom.
The moment for action arrived in December 1825, during the succession crisis following the death of Alexander I. On December 26 (December 14 in the Old Style), officers of the Northern Society led an uprising on Senate Square in Saint Petersburg. Poorly prepared and lacking coordination, the revolt was brutally suppressed by troops loyal to the new Tsar, Nicholas I. Five leaders were hanged in July 1826, and hundreds more were exiled to Siberia, becoming martyrs and symbols of the struggle for freedom in Russia.
