Medieval Tver: A Rival to Moscow

Tver, first mentioned in chronicles in 1135, began as a settlement for Novgorodian traders. Its location at the confluence of the Volga and Tvertsa rivers made it a point on trade routes. In 1247, Tver became the capital of an independent principality under Yaroslav Yaroslavich, brother of Alexander Nevsky. This marked the beginning of Tver's growth into one of the Russian states.

During the 13th and 14th centuries, Tver was a rival to Moscow for political influence in northeastern Rus'. Under Prince Mikhail Yaroslavich (1271-1318), Tver developed crafts and built churches. The rivalry was often brutal. In 1327, an anti-Mongol uprising in Tver was suppressed with the help of Moscow Prince Ivan Kalita, leading to the city being burned and plundered. Tver was formally annexed by Moscow in 1485 under Ivan III, losing its political independence.

Imperial Reconstruction and Soviet Changes

A fire in 1763 destroyed much of Tver. Empress Catherine the Great ordered its reconstruction according to a unified architectural plan, resulting in wide streets, squares, and stone mansions, including a three-rayed street layout known as the "Tver Trident." This reconstruction made Tver an example of 18th-century Russian urban planning. The Imperial Travel Palace, built between 1764 and 1766, served as a resting place for the imperial family on their journeys between St. Petersburg and Moscow.

In 1931, Tver was renamed Kalinin in honor of Mikhail Kalinin, a Soviet statesman born in the Tver Governorate. During the 1930s, many churches and historical monuments were demolished, including the 13th-century Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in 1935. The city sustained damage during its occupation by Nazi forces in October 1941, but was liberated in December of the same year. In 1990, the city reverted to its original name, Tver.

• —Tver Imperial Palace — Built for Catherine the Great between 1764 and 1766, this Neoclassical palace with Baroque elements served as a stopping point for imperial travelers between St. Petersburg and Moscow. It now houses the Tver Regional Art Gallery, displaying Russian and Western European paintings, icons, and period furniture.
• —Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour — The original 13th-century cathedral was destroyed in 1935. The current building is a reconstruction on the historic site, completed in the 21st century. It functions as Tver's main cathedral.
• —Monument to Afanasy Nikitin — Unveiled in 1955 on the Volga Embankment, this monument honors Afanasy Nikitin, a 15th-century merchant from Tver. He was one of the first Europeans to visit India and left a detailed written account of his travels, "A Journey Beyond Three Seas."
• —Starovolzhsky Bridge (Old Volga Bridge) — Opened in 1900, this bridge features steel towers and curving trusses. It offers views of the Volga River.
• —City Garden (Gorodskoy Sad) — A central park with cafes and a Ferris wheel, it provides a space for a walk and views of the Volga and the Imperial Travel Palace.
• —White Trinity Church — This is the oldest surviving church in Tver, dating back to 1564.
• —Museum of Tver Life (Muzey Tverskogo Byta) — Located in a historic merchant's house, this museum reconstructs the lifestyle of Tver's citizens during the 18th and 19th centuries, displaying period furniture, clothing, and household items.

The period from late June to mid-August offers the most comfortable weather for outdoor activities. Average daily temperatures range from 15–25°C. July is typically the warmest month, with average highs around 23-25°C.

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) have changeable weather. May can offer clear skies and fewer crowds. March and April can have thawing snow and freezing puddles. Autumn provides golden landscapes, but also increasing coolness and wet days, particularly in October.

Winter, from December to February, is cold, with average temperatures around -4°C to -15°C and snowfall. Prepare for cold conditions and short daylight hours.

Tver is accessible by train from Moscow and St. Petersburg. From Moscow's Leningradsky Railway Terminal, high-speed "Sapsan" trains take just over an hour, and "Lastochka" trains take 1-1.5 hours. Regular trains take around 2 hours. From St. Petersburg, a "Sapsan" train takes about two hours. Purchase tickets in advance, especially for weekend travel.

Within Tver, the main landmarks in the city center are walkable. Many attractions are along the Volga River embankments and around central squares. Public transportation, including buses, connects various parts of the city. Parking can be limited in the historical center. Day trips to nearby towns are accessible by local buses from the Tver bus station, located near the railway station.
