The history of Ryazan
From Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky to Ryazan
The city now known as Ryazan was founded in 1095 as Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky. It functioned as a frontier fortress, built on a high hill at the confluence of the Trubezh and Lybed rivers, where the Trubezh flows into the Oka. For a period, it was secondary to the original capital of the Ryazan Principality, known today as Staraya Ryazan (Old Ryazan), located about 60 km away.
