🎭Your Mission

Tsar Ivan IV unleashed the Oprichnina, his black-hooded death squad, on Moscow

**Ivan the Terrible — The Oprichnina's Register of Shadows**

« Ivan's cruelty knew no bounds, and his Oprichniks were his instruments. »
Metropolitan Philip II, detractor of the Oprichnina (1568)

The Oprichnina and the Tsar's Terror

The reign of Ivan IV, known as "the Terrible," was marked by a dark period called the Oprichnina (1565-1572). It was a system of parallel government created by the Tsar to break the power of the great boyars and consolidate his autocratic authority. Ivan divided the country into two: the Oprichnina, his personal domain where he ruled with absolute authority, and a dedicated militia, the Oprichniks, recognizable by their black habits, dog heads attached to their saddles, and brooms, symbolizing their determination to "sweep away treason" and "gnaw at the throats of the Tsar's enemies."

The Oprichniks became a force of terror, carrying out massive purges, confiscating lands and wealth, and torturing thousands of people suspected of treason. Entire cities, such as Novgorod in 1570, were sacked. The Church itself did not escape this fury, with Metropolitan Philip II being openly murdered by Malyuta Skuratov for denouncing the atrocities. Although the Oprichnina was officially dissolved in 1572, its legacy of fear and brutal centralization of power left a deep scar on Russian society.

1565
Creation of the Oprichnina by Ivan the Terrible.
1569
Assassination of Metropolitan Philip II by Malyuta Skuratov.
1572
Official dissolution of the Oprichnina, but the terror persists.

You get 3 levels of hints per puzzle (increasing penalty). If truly stuck, you can skip the step (45-min penalty but you keep going).

Q05What's the age range?

From 12 without an adult, from 6 with an adult reading puzzles. Works for families, couples, friend groups, companies.

Q06What if my city isn't in the catalogue?

Pre-register or contact us — we'll email you as soon as your city is live.

Q07What is augmented reality exactly?

Point your phone at the façade: a historical character appears full-screen and speaks to you in your language. At the puzzle climax, golden letters magically write themselves on the real wall — that's your answer. After each puzzle solved, a treasure chest floats in front of you. Seeing is believing.
