Moscow — Phantom Metro-2 Network

🎭Your Mission

You are Lazar Kaganovich, Soviet Transport Minister in 1935, tasked with overseeing the construction of Metro-2, Stalin's ultra-secret underground network.

You arrive at Alexander Garden

Follow the trail of Metro-2, Stalin's phantom network that still connects the Kremlin's secret bunkers to Moscow's nerve centers today.

The story that haunts this land

Moscow hides beneath its cobblestones the USSR's greatest secret: Metro-2, an underground network parallel to the public metro inaugurated on May 15, 1935. Lazar Kaganovich, Stalin's right-hand man, supervised from 1935 the construction of tunnels reaching 84 meters deep, directly connecting the Kremlin to the capital's strategic centers. Your first steps in Alexander Garden, created in 1819-1821 after victory over Napoleon, take you above the secret galleries running beneath the park's 9.2 hectares. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, inaugurated in 1967 with its Eternal Flame lit by Leonid Brezhnev, conceals one of the phantom network's most strategic entrances.

The Kremlin Wall, built between 1485 and 1516 under Ivan the Terrible, hides within its 2,235 meters of fortifications the main access points to Metro-2. Its 20 defensive towers, including Spasskaya Tower with its clock since 1625, mask ultra-rapid elevators descending to command bunkers. The wall thickness, varying from 3.5 to 6.5 meters depending on sections, facilitated the boring of secret tunnels without weakening the medieval structure. Listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 1990, this wall protects both treasures of the past and military installations of the present.

Red Square, with its 23,000 m² historically devoted to markets since the 15th century, became under Stalin the nerve center of Metro-2. Lenin's Mausoleum, built in 1924 by architect Alexei Shchusev, conceals in its foundations an underground complex connected to the 416 km of phantom network lines. The square, named 'Krasnaya Ploshchad' in the 17th century — 'krasnaya' meaning both 'red' and 'beautiful' in Old Russian — perfectly justifies its double meaning: architectural beauty on the surface, red power in the depths.

Tverskaya Street, Moscow's main artery since the 16th century, underwent massive reconstruction ordered by Stalin between 1935 and 1937: widening from 25 to 40 meters, demolition of 1,700 buildings. This transformation concealed the real reason for the works: digging beneath the avenue's 1.6 km the Metro-2 tunnels connecting the Kremlin to strategic stations. The Stalinist architecture buildings that line the street today, inspired by the 'Seven Sisters' (prestige skyscrapers), mask the ventilation shafts of the secret underground network, camouflaged as decorative elements.

Your journey through underground Moscow ends with the troubling certainty that Metro-2 still functions. The current 222 public metro stations, decorated with mosaics and chandeliers according to the Stalinist doctrine of 'palaces for the people,' represent only the visible tip of the iceberg. Beneath your feet runs a second network, deeper, more secret, connecting government bunkers and military command centers. Rising to the surface from Red Square, you carry the vision of a double city: the tourist Moscow of guidebooks and the phantom Moscow of secret services, both UNESCO World Heritage since 1990, one celebrated, the other unspeakable.

1931
Start of Moscow Metro construction, a prelude to underground ambitions.
1941
Battle of Moscow, reinforcing the strategic need for deep bunkers.
1953
Death of Stalin, but the underground network, like a ghost, lives on in rumors.
