Moscow — Phantom Metro-2 Network

Moscow hides beneath its cobblestones the USSR's greatest secret: Metro-2, an underground network parallel to the public metro inaugurated on May 15, 1935. The Stalinist architecture buildings that line the street today, inspired by the 'Seven Sisters' (prestige skyscrapers), mask the ventilation shafts of the secret underground network, camouflaged as decorative elements.

Your journey through underground Moscow ends with the troubling certainty that Metro-2 still functions. The current 222 public metro stations, decorated with mosaics and chandeliers according to the Stalinist doctrine of 'palaces for the people,' represent only the visible tip of the iceberg. Beneath your feet runs a second network, deeper, more secret, connecting government bunkers and military command centers.
