Inside the citadel of Dalt Vila, where the Phoenicians founded Ibossim
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
In 654 BC, the Phoenicians founded Ibossim on this promontory. Twenty-seven centuries later, the Renaissance ramparts still hide Punic remains that no one has been able to decipher.
Dalt Vila is not just a postcard backdrop above the clubs. This UNESCO World Heritage citadel is the oldest Phoenician settlement in the western Mediterranean. Charles V's Renaissance walls, designed by Giovanni Battista Calvi in 1555, envelop Punic, Roman and Arab strata. The Puig des Molins necropolis, with its 3,000 hypogea carved into the rock, is the largest Punic necropolis in the world.
« "Ibiza is the only Mediterranean island where the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans left visible traces within the same perimeter." »— — On the cathedral esplanade, facing the sea and Formentera
The Phoenicians of Tyre founded Ibossim around 654 BC on the promontory overlooking the natural harbour. The island became a crucial trading post on the tin route between the Atlantic and the Levant. The Es Culleram sanctuary, in a cave in the island's north, was dedicated to the goddess Tanit — protector of sailors and the dead.
Under Carthage, Ibossim prospered through the trade of salt, garum and purple dye. The Puig des Molins necropolis grew to over 3,000 hypogea tombs. The terracotta figurines found in these tombs — depicting Tanit, Bes and Melqart — are among the finest examples of Punic art in the Mediterranean.
Rome took the island in 123 BC. The Arabs named it Yabisa. The Catalans reconquered it in 1235. Charles V had the Renaissance walls built that we see today. But beneath every layer, the Phoenician foundations persist — and it is in their stones that the puzzles of this game are hidden.
