Ibiza's harbour has a pirate's memory
The Sa Penya quarter, with its narrow alleys clinging to the cliff below Dalt Vila, was once the haunt of fishermen and corsairs. The monument to Ibiza's corsairs on the Passeig Marítim honours Antonio Riquer Arabí, the local privateer who captured the English brig Felicity in 1806. The watchtowers punctuating the coastline — Torre de Ses Portes, Torre des Savinar, Torre de sa Sal Rossa — formed a smoke-and-fire signalling network covering the entire island.

Barbary pirates, corsairs & watchtowers
From the 15th century, Barbary raids from North Africa struck Ibiza's coasts with terrifying regularity. Barbarossa himself reportedly raided the island in 1536. Inhabitants took refuge in fortified churches — like Sant Jordi de ses Salines or Sant Antoni — whose thick walls and towers served as a last resort.
To counter the threat, the Spanish crown had a network of eighteen watchtowers erected along the coastline in the 16th century. Each tower communicated with the next by smoke signals during the day and fire at night. This system could alert Dalt Vila in under an hour, regardless of the point of attack.
The Ibicencos did not merely defend themselves. In the 18th century, they armed their own corsairs. Antonio Riquer Arabí became a local hero by capturing enemy ships on behalf of the crown. His obelisk on the harbour is the symbol of an island that turned fear into pride.
