Asturian pre-Romanesque art, when a small kingdom defied Islam
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
In the 9th century, the only Christian territory in Iberia invented a unique architectural art. Its churches, perched on Oviedo's hills, are World Heritage — and their stones keep the memory of a kingdom that refused to bend.
Asturian pre-Romanesque art is the best-kept secret of European architecture. In the 9th century, while the rest of Iberia was under Muslim rule, the small Kingdom of Asturias created an unprecedented architectural style: barrel vaults, twisted columns, sculpted medallions. Santa María del Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo and the Cámara Santa in the cathedral are witnesses to this creative explosion that UNESCO has protected since 1985.

« "Asturias is the only part of Spain the Moors never conquered. And these little churches are their victory cry in stone." »— — On Monte Naranco, facing Santa María, when the fog lifts
In 722, a Visigothic nobleman named Pelagius won at Covadonga the first Christian victory against the Muslim armies. This was the beginning of the Kingdom of Asturias, a tiny mountain state that became the cradle of the Reconquista. Its capital, Oviedo, founded in 761, grew rapidly under Kings Alfonso II and Ramiro I.
It was Ramiro I (842-850) who commissioned the Monte Naranco masterpieces. Santa María, originally a royal palace then converted to a church, is a miracle of architectural balance: its barrel vaults, blind arcading and sculpted medallions have no known precedent. San Miguel de Lillo, the former royal chapel, preserves bas-reliefs inspired by Byzantine and Carolingian art.
This Asturian pre-Romanesque style is a unique phenomenon: it has neither direct ancestor nor descendant. It is a pure invention, born from the isolation of a besieged kingdom seeking in architecture the affirmation of its Christian legitimacy. UNESCO recognised it in 1985, and the six listed monuments are now Oviedo's treasure.

The stops on your route are a surprise. You'll discover them one by one, guided by your phone, starting from the meeting point.
