Barbary raids and Palma's maritime defence
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
For three centuries, Barbary corsairs terrorised the coasts of Mallorca. Palma transformed into a fortress — but its defenders kept their own secrets.
From the 15th to the 18th century, Barbary corsairs — based in Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli — launched devastating raids on Mallorca's coasts. Villages burned, inhabitants enslaved, crops destroyed: the corsair terror shaped the island's architecture and psychology. Palma responded with an impressive defensive system: Renaissance walls, coastal watchtowers and a fleet of galleys. The Llotja, the maritime trade exchange, became the nerve centre of the counterattack.
« "In Mallorca, houses were not built facing the sea. They were built with their backs turned, ready to flee." »— — 32 watchtowers protected the coasts of Mallorca
The most devastating raid occurred in 1561, when Dragut's corsairs attacked Sóller and were repelled by the inhabitants in the battle of 11 May — still celebrated today. But Palma itself was not spared: in 1558, the corsair Turgut Reis threatened the port, forcing the construction of new walls along the Passeig Marítim.
The Llotja of Palma, a Gothic civil masterpiece built by Guillem Sagrera in 1451, served as a maritime trade exchange. It was there that shipowners financed expeditions against corsairs, ransoms for captives were negotiated and defence plans were drawn up. Its twisted columns without capitals — a unique architectural feat — also served as a signalling system: the position of flags on each column indicated the threat.
Palma's Renaissance walls, erected in the 16th century, turned the city into an impregnable fortress. Polygonal bastions — the Baluard de Sant Pere, the Baluard de Berard — were designed according to the latest Italian techniques. Today promenades and museums, these bastions contain underground galleries never opened to the public.

Yes, from age 6 with an adult reading puzzles aloud, and from age 12 on their own. Kids love the "find the camera clue" part — it's very visual, gets them genuinely involved.
Morning between 10 and 11, or early afternoon around 2 PM, is ideal. You still have daylight ahead, Palma de Mallorca · Waterfront & walls is less crowded, and the light is better for camera clues.
