Mallorca's crypto-Jews facing the Inquisition
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
For centuries, Palma's xuetes practised their faith in secret, in cellars and behind blank walls. The Inquisition hunted them. Their memory survives.
The xuetes — from the Mallorcan "xulla", pork lard, a mocking nickname given to converted Jews — formed a community unique in Europe. After the forced conversions of 1435, these crypto-Jews continued to practise their religion in secret for centuries. Confined to the Call quarter around Calle de la Platería (now Carrer dels Argenters), they endured the auto-da-fé of 1691 when 37 of them were burned alive. Yet the xuetes persisted — and their descendants still live in Palma, bearing fifteen identifiable surnames.

« "In the Call, every house has two entrances. One for the neighbours. The other for God." »— — The walls of the Call still keep the xuetes' silence
The Jewish community of Mallorca was one of the most prosperous in the medieval Mediterranean. Majorcan Jewish cartographers — including Abraham Cresques, author of the Catalan Atlas of 1375 — were renowned throughout Europe. Their quarter, the Call, occupied a maze of alleys in the heart of Palma, between present-day Plaça de Santa Eulàlia and Calle de la Platería.
The pogroms of 1391 and the forced conversions of 1435 compelled Majorcan Jews to convert to Catholicism. But many continued to practise Judaism in secret — the xuetes. They lit candles on Friday evenings behind closed shutters, cooked in cellars so the smell would not betray their kosher dishes, and whispered prayers to each other.
The Inquisition struck with particular violence in 1691: during three auto-da-fé, 37 xuetes were burned alive and 3 in effigy. Their property was confiscated, their names inscribed on "sambenitos" displayed in churches. The stigmatisation of the fifteen xuete families lasted until the 20th century. Today, the Call is a peaceful quarter — but its walls have forgotten nothing.

The gameplay: AR, camera, hidden clues
At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language.
