When the liberators became the executioners
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
On August 31, 1813, Anglo-Portuguese troops who came to liberate the city from Napoleonic occupation burned it to the ground. Only one street survived.
When you walk the perfectly ordered streets of the Parte Vieja, you walk on the ashes of a city that burned for three days. Every facade you see is an act of reconstruction — a challenge thrown at history by survivors who refused to vanish. What the flames took, stone gave back.
« "The entire city was nothing but a blaze. The soldiers, drunk on victory and wine, could no longer tell enemies from civilians." »— — Testimony of a British officer, September 1813
In 1813, during the Peninsular War, Napoleon's French troops had occupied the city for five years. The Anglo-Portuguese army under General Graham laid siege. The fighting was fierce around the medieval walls and Monte Urgull, transformed into an impregnable fortress.
On August 31, after a deadly assault at the breach in the ramparts, the allied soldiers entered the city. What followed was not a liberation — it was a sack. For three days, the troops looted, assaulted and set fires. Of the city's 600 houses, only those on Calle Trinidad were spared — protected by the wind.
Reconstruction began as early as 1817, following a rigorous neoclassical plan. The city you see today — its arcades, its regular squares, its harmonious facades — was born from this catastrophe. San Sebastián is a phoenix city, entirely recreated from its own ashes.
You're not just buying an escape game. You're carrying a living guide — historical anecdotes, forgotten legends, key monuments, hidden architecture — unfolding as you go.
At each stop, places ordinary guides miss — secret façades, sculpted crests, alleys steeped in history.
Every riddle is rooted in a real historical fact or local legend. You leave with dozens of stories to tell.
Learn to read buildings — flamboyant Gothic, Baroque, Art Deco — like a real art historian, while having fun.
Walk through the city like a novel's character — every alley becomes a stage, every square a theatre.
A voice walks with you at every step, tells the story of each place, reads clues, adds a cinematic feel.

Usually 2 to 4 km of total walking, within 1.5 km as the crow flies from the start point. The route is designed to be walkable at a relaxed pace, no public transport needed.
Great two-person format. Narration is dramatic without overdoing it, puzzles are designed to spark conversation. Ideal for new relationships or anniversaries — you discover the city and coordinate on puzzles simultaneously.
Intermittent 4G is plenty. Maps are cached at startup. Narration and clues load per stop, so a so-so signal between stops is fine. GPS itself uses no data.
